Team Capability and Operational Maturity

The best AI product in the world will fail if the team maintaining it lacks the skills or maturity to operate it responsibly.

When you acquire a company, you’re acquiring the team. If the team can’t explain how the product works, can’t diagnose why it’s failing, and can’t maintain it at scale, you’re inheriting a support burden.

Red Flags

  • No one can explain the model’s decision-making process. If your ML engineer can’t walk you through how the model arrives at a prediction, that’s a red flag. The knowledge is trapped in someone’s head, or it doesn’t exist.

Integration risk comes in several forms:

Technical Integration

Does the target’s AI product integrate cleanly with your existing systems? Or will you need to build custom integrations, data pipelines, and APIs?

If the target’s product is tightly coupled to their own infrastructure, you’ll need to either:

  1. Keep running their infrastructure separately (higher operational burden, higher cost)
  2. Migrate to your infrastructure (requires engineering effort, introduces risk of downtime or data loss)
  3. Rebuild the product on your platform (highest effort, but cleanest long-term)

Data Migration
